Traveling is one of the coolest and most exciting pastimes anyone can do these days. And it is important that you come up with ideas that are going to help you get the best possible travel experience. Solo travel has become significantly more popular in recent times, and there are loads of things that contribute to this popularity such as the feeling of ultimate freedom, a way to meet and spend time with locals and a chance to do some soul-searching. Whatever your reason for heading on a solo journey is, it is guaranteed, you are up for one heck of an adventure.
If you are looking to jet off to some distant land and immerse yourself in a new culture, you should go right ahead. But, if you are flying solo, it is always good to know some useful travel tips that will make your trip more enjoyable. As a frequent solo traveler, I have learned from both- other, more experienced travelers and from my own mistakes. Check out these ideas before heading off to your next solo travel adventure.
1) Research Thoroughly
The first thing to do if you are heading anywhere alone is to make sure you do your research thoroughly before you go. You need to make sure you know the political situation in the country, and what the visa process is. Also, learning a few words in a local language and some customs will go a long way with locals. You also need to think about the accommodation options. Whether you’re staying at a hotel in Condado San Juan, an Airbnb in the south of France or doing Couchsurfing, research is required. No matter how adventurous you are, you don’t want to find yourself in the middle of the night in a foreign country where no one speaks English without the accommodation. Invest some time, do your research and have the best possible experience.
2) If You are ‘Gramming it, do it the right way
Let’s be honest, most of us like to share photos of our travels on social networks, and there is nothing wrong with that! The best platform to do that is, of course, Instagram, and if you are already doing it- do it the right way and document your journey in style. ‘Gramming your trip and sharing it with your friends is one of the best ways of making sure you record the adventure in real time, and it can make your solo trip more interesting!
3) Go Somewhere Unusual
Traveling solo is the perfect opportunity to have the unique experience you have always wanted, and the best way of doing that is to make sure you go somewhere unusual. Think about what kind of traveler you are, and use this to help you choose your ideal destination. There are plenty of places to choose from, but going somewhere less touristy will give you a more unique and authentic feeling. Maybe instead of heading to Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia, you can explore Singapore, Japan or China?
4) Talk About Your Adventures
Solo travelers who talk about their adventures tend to connect with their experiences on a deeper level. This is something that you should definitely consider, and you need to decide the best way of sharing your stories. For some people, this takes the form of a travel blog or vlog, while for others it might involve conversations and exchanging experience with other travelers.
5) Use the opportunity to meet locals
When traveling with friends or family, we tend to stick with each other and rarely spend time with other people. Traveling solo gives you the excellent opportunity to meet locals, interact with them and get to know the local culture, customs and everyday life from the first hand. Plus, it is always nice to have friends from all over the world, isn’t it? You can meet locals by doing Couchsurfing, joining some volunteer program or simply by starting a conversation at the bar.
These are just some of the tips that can elevate your experience to the next level. Do proper research, always be open minded and eager to soak up every moment, and of course, have plenty of common sense. In this way, your solo trip will be one of the greatest things you have ever done. And if anyone asks you why are you traveling solo, just ask them, why they are not.
